Do Your Eyes a Favor!

Your eyes have given you the gift of vision and all the wonders that go with it.  If you're age 40 or older, it's time to return the favor.  The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that adults see an ophthalmologist for a baseline eye disease screening at age 40 because that's the time when early signs of disease and changes in vision may start to occur.

It's been estimated that 2.22 million people have the most common form of glaucoma, and by the year 2020, that number is expected to increase to 3.36 million.  Most people have no clue that they have the disease until vision loss is extensive.  Early detection and treatment may prevent or delay vision loss.

Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness and typically affects working aged adults.  Although effective treatment for reducing the risk of this blinding disease is available, many patients with diabetes do not receive evaluation and treatment in time to minimize the risk of vision loss.

Similar to a mammogram at age 40 or a colon screening at age 50, an eye disease screening is a friendly reminder that as you age we need to maintain your eye health.

A baseline screening by an Ophthalmologist can detect:
Common abnormalities of the eye
  • Uncommon abnormalities such as ocular tumors
  • Systemic diseases that effect the eye such as:
    • Hypertension
    • Diabetes
  • Potentially blinding diseases such as:
    • Glaucoma
    • Cataract
    • Diabetic Retinopathy
