Glaucoma Therapy, Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

Glaucoma is a degenerative disease that if left untreated can cause permanent damage to the optic nerve, resulting in gradual vision loss and eventually blindness. Damage to the optic nerve, due to glaucoma, is usually caused by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Clear fluid, called aqueous humor circulates through the eye providing nourishment to the tissues pressure to help maintain the shape of the eye. Open Angle Glaucoma (OAG), occurs when there is an increase in fluid production or a decrease in fluid drainage. Over time, as the optic nerve fibers are destroyed, peripheral (side) vision is lost. Blocked fluid flow: Aqueous humor flows out of the eye through Trabecular Meshwork (TM), near the edge of the iris. If the TM is blocked, restricting drainage, the pressure inside the eye increases. Of those age 60 or over, the chances are approximately 6 in 10 that you are experiencing the symptoms of cataracts. A cataract refers to the clouding of the eye's natural lens. Because cataracts form gradually---often over years---the symptoms are often difficult to spot. Take a few moments now to see if any of these symptoms are familiar to you: Sensitivity to Glare The erosion of one's ability (as compared to that at a younger age) to adjust to excessive light is an early sign of cataracts. Other indications of cataracts include difficulty when driving toward the sun, difficulty to see traffic signals against a bright sky, or a delay in return to normal vision after passing an oncoming set of bright headlights. Headaches, eye fatigue, burning and watering of the eyes when exposed to bright light---even though your visual acuity remains essentially unchanged---are also symptoms to look for. Meet Dr. Walt Bogart of the Carolina Eye Center

Dr. Walt Bogart has been practicing Ophthalmology for more than 24 years. He is board certified and a member in good standing of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has practiced in the Columbia area for over 21 years. Dr. Bogart received his medical training at Baylor College of Medicine. He did his Internship at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. His residency in ophthalmology was in Washington D.C. at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Dr. Bogart has served his country in both the army and the air force. During the Vietnam conflict he was a helicopter pilot. After medical school he served as both a general medical officer (prior to his residency training) and as Chief Ophthalmologist at Ft. Jackson, S.C. In March 2009, Dr. Bogart retired with more than 27 years of service with the South Carolina National Guard.
